Heaton Moor ladies turned out an impressive 14 players for Sunday’s County Trials. Whilst some went hoping for selection, others took the opportunity to get a bit of match practice ahead of our first league match on Sunday 24th September (Eccles away – a fixture we won last year).
Cheshire Women’s Trials Altrincham Kersal hosted the event with players from Northwich, Warrington and Chester University also attending. Altrincham Kersal won the first 40 minute game 25-0 against Heaton Moor (with a few guests on each side). AK beat Northwich 10-0 in the 2nd 40 minutes (assisted by a few Heaton Moor players on both sides). The final 20 minute game was played between 2 mixed teams, chosen by the selectors and was won 10-5 by the team in the Northwich shirts…..which were pretty sweaty by this point as the weather was far too warm for rugby! Huge congratulations to the 7 of our girls who were selected for the Cheshire squad. Captain Katy Hart & Vice Captain Jacqui Francis lead by example and got themselves selected, followed by Kate Morley who (like Katy) played for Cheshire last year too. Long serving Heaton Moor forward Ellen Somerwill and fly-half Sonia Johnson who joined us from Buxton last year were selected, along with Julie Howell who has only been playing rugby for 1˝ seasons. Briony Seymour was also selected but it took a while for us to realise as they mistook her for a piece of cheese when they called her name as Brie! It was a tough day as many of the other players were from higher leagues but with 7 Cheshire players in our ranks (4 more than last year) – BRING ON ECCLES! |
