After a few frustrating fixtures, Heaton Moor Ladies were delighted to get a game of proper rugby at last - 15 a side, contested scrums & lots of mud!
Sunday 4th March
by Angie Pollard with assistance from pitchside reporter Anna The first half was a close fought contest with great defensive work by Heaton Moor and no scores. Helen made some good clearance kicks from full back (nice to actually get to play with one of those!) and Martina, Briony & Jacqui hit the Rossendale girls with great tackles. Sonya had a few good runs from fly half but the ankle deep mud prevented her from running as fast as normal. After changes in the front row at half time, Rossendale lost the first scrum against the head and Moor pushed within 5 yards of the line after a good run by Domps. Heidi & Sonia made great runs with good support from the forwards. Heidi opened the scoring after a great pass from Jackie but the the strong wind prevented Helen adding the conversion. Moor took the 2nd scrum of the half against the head before injuries to Rossendale players reduced the game to 12-a-side uncontested scrums (it was great while it lasted!). Laurence did well to pick up a kick on the wing and passed to Heidi for her 2nd try. Heidi completed her hat-trick before losing a boot in the mud on her next run. The lineouts worked well throughout the game, despite the slippery ball. Domps took a hard hit but somehow managed to stay on her feet and Martina had a great run...until she collided with the ref! Sonia made some great passes throughout the game and broke through 3 tackles in one of her later runs. Overall, it was a good tempered game & a great performance by Heaton Moor Ladies. Forward of the Match went to Debbie for her relentless pick and drive efforts and Back of the Match to Laurence in her first ever game of rugby (you couldn't tell). Amanda & Anna assisted them with their pint downing and easily beat Rossendale. Our next game is home to Colne & Nelson on Sunday 11th March at 2:45pm. Hope to see you there! |
