Moor Ladies narrow defeat after valiant comeback 17-14

Sunday 24th September

Heaton Moor played their first game of the season away at Eccles, proudly turning out 16 players (that's one bonus point in the league before we even kicked off!). Eccles could not field 15 players so the match was played as 12 a side.

Moor began their season in typical style by leaving their heads in the changing rooms at the start of the game. Eccles dominated the first quarter of the game and their strength showed in the scrum. They scored 2 tries (1 converted) early on before Heidi brought down an Eccles player after an impressive 20 yard chase. Moor woke up (at last!) and kept Eccles at bay for a while, with the scrums improving each time. Eccles did eventually break through the defence once more but failed to convert.

By the end of the first half, Moor were beginning to run the game & came close to scoring after a penalty in the Eccles 22. The scoreline at the break was 17-0 to Eccles.

Moor continued to improve their game throughout the second half and had the luxury of 4 substitutions. Back Row Domps made an quick impression with a great tackle in her first minute on the pitch. 2nd row Mel was the first to cross the Eccles line after Ellie got close in her first ever game of rugby. Scrum/fly half TJ (a confused ex-rugby league player!) successfully converted the try. Regular try scorer Heidi got her name on the scoresheet and TJ's conversion brought Moor within 3 points at 17-14.

With 20 minutes to go, Moor continued to play well and spent plenty of time in the Eccles half of the pitch. Determination spurred on tired legs as the girls fought on all the way to the final whistle. Unlike last year's tight game at Eccles, that one more score failed to materialise but Moor could be proud of their efforts (for the last 3/4 of the game at least!). It was a much better start to the season than last year's battering by Bolton and one we hope to carry on at Liverpool Collegiate this Sunday. Domps, TJ, Zoe and Ellie all made impressive debuts but it was another new girl Martina who took the honour of downing the pint as man of the match - a close call & lets hope Captain Katy picks someone better at drinking next time!
