After the previous week's bloody defeat at the hands of Liverpool Collegiate, Heaton Moor Ladies returned to winning ways and topped the league table for the first time ever.
Sunday 21st January Moor had 15 players to Colne & Nelson's 12, although the game was played as 10's (with uncontested scrums) because a couple of their players were late. Conditions were far from ideal as the pitch was on a hillside, covered in twigs, very muddy and waterlogged in places. The weather varied between rain, sleet, snow, hail and sun but always cold & windy. The deep mud slowed the backs a little but centre's Heidi and Cat still managed two tries each (one converted by Captain Katy) and TJ got her first for Heaton Moor. Colne & Nelson managed to get over Moor's line 4 times with 3 conversions but Moor always looked the likely winners (even if it was a bit close for comfort near the end!). Overall, Moor were pleased with their performance and support play. The subs bench was full of forwards so we had the luxury of substituting most of the pack at half time. The tight-head prop position saw a welcome return from Amanda in the first half (after 18 months out due to injury) and Joanne's rugby debut in the second half. Heidi & Nell deservedly took the back & forward of the match pints but lost miserably to Colne & Nelson in the drinking. Our next game is at home to 2nd placed Ormskirk on 18th February (2pm KO). It's a vital match as Ormskirk are only 1 point behind us in the league and haven't been beaten since they last visited Heaton Moor in April in the last game played out of the old clubhouse. Please come along to cheer the girls on as we do appreciate your support. Don't forget: WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE!!!!!! (sorry, couldn't resist saying it just once more!) |
