Moor hold on to record double over Oldham. With the league programme entering its second half, Moor recorded their first ‘double’ of the season in this tough game against Oldham. The recent rains made open play difficult, with greasy conditions underfoot. Nevertheless, Moor opened the scoring within two minutes from a midfield drive that was switched wide for winger Ivan Smetana to glide in at the corner. Ten minutes later a similar move was to prove successful as a long pass from fly-half Martin Shelley was flicked on by centre Phil Thomas to Smetana, who beat two defenders to score wide out, Shelley converting for a 12-point lead. On the half hour, a good break out of defence by full-back Chris Ogden-Smith was continued by Shelley, who saw his chip through bounce into touch a yard short. After the interval, Oldham made great efforts to overcome the deficit, helped by Moor losing a player to the ‘sin-bin’ after only four minutes. Their pressure produced two penalty scores, the second deflecting over from an upright to reduce the margin to 12-6. With ten minutes remaining, a strike against the head at a scrum on the opposition’s 5-metre line saw Moor’s pack achieve their first pushover try of the season, Keith Young getting the touchdown. A couple of minutes before time, Oldham deservedly scored a consolation try as their left winger broke through in the corner, the conversion bouncing off the crossbar, and Moor withstood an injury time surge to run out winners 17-11. For the second consecutive Saturday, Moor enjoyed a clean sweep as their 2nd and 3rd XVs also recorded league wins – the former winning 12-0 away at Aldwinians and the latter winning 64-15 at home to Crewe & Nantwich. With no matches over the festive period, the players have a chance to recharge their batteries, and glasses, for the New Year.
