Moor finally got its league programme back on track on Saturday when the side played its first game for 7 weeks against local rivals Aldwinians and even then was fortunate to do so as the ground was quite firm following a sharp frost the night before and was one of only two matches to be played in the division. As expected following such a long lay-off, play was a bit rusty and the visitors, who had managed to play a game the week before, took full advantage of this to put the Green Lane side under a lot of pressure in the first half and were eager to avenge their previous two defeats by Moor this season. Initially it seemed as if the home side would continue where it had left off in the last game before Christmas, when eleven tries were scored, as within 2 minutes it had opened the scoring. Moor, having kicked off, was awarded a scrum deep in the opposition’s half and from this the ball was passed swiftly down the back line and centre Petr Stourac effortlessly beat the cover to cross for a try, scrum-half Shaun Stirrup failing with the conversion. The game then became bogged down in mid-field, but Stirrup was successful with a penalty kick towards the end of the first quarter but missed another some seven minutes later. For the last 15 minutes before the interval, it was all Aldwinians as its forwards proceeded to camp on the Moor 5-metre line, but resolute and effective defensive play by Moor, something that the side has become quite good at in the last couple of seasons, denied the visitors a score. The latter did cross the try line on one occasion, but the referee adjudged the ball to have been held up and the home side retained an 8-0 lead at half-time. Within 5 minutes of the resumption, both sides missed a penalty kick apiece and play again became confined to mid-field, with Moor just having the advantage of position and possession but home spectators had to wait until 10 minutes from the end before the lead was extended. Whilst attacking on their 10-metre line, the visitors lost possession and debutant winger Nik Pearson collected the loose ball, only the second time he had touched it in the game, and with a subtle change of direction, left the opposition defenders in his wake as he streaked in to touch down, the conversion again being missed. The visitors did put in a late rally, but Moor again stifled any threat and ran out winners 13-0 to move up to third-place in the table. Whilst this performance was well below par for both sides, the Moor players can be reasonably pleased with their defensive work but will have to move up a gear this coming Saturday as the visitors to Green Lane are second-placed Workington, k.o. 2:15 p.m. When these sides last played each other at the end of September, the outcome was in the balance until the last kick of the match with Moor losing by a couple of points. |
