New Year same story for victorious 1sts.
Moor began 2008 with a hard-fought victory in difficult conditions. With a strong wind blowing down the slope, the expected match of two halves ensued. A combination of astute kicking in attack and close marking in defence kept the home side in the driving seat until half time, being rewarded with 2 tries from short range line-outs followed by rolling mauls to put them 10 points clear. From the turnaround, Moor took advantage of the conditions to pressurise the home side, forcing 3 penalties in the opening 10 minutes, 1 of which was converted by a jet-lagged Martin Shelley. Petr Stourac then forced his way over in the corner from a blind-side break, but the referee declared himself unsighted. Another Shelley penalty shortly afterwards reduced the margin to 4 points, but the home side defended well to keep Moor supporters on tenterhooks. The last 10 minutes of constant pressure eventually produced the breakthrough. From a Littleborough scrum 5 metres from their line, the ever alert Felipe Silva charged down the defensive clearance for an opportunistic try, converted by Shelley, to put Moor ahead for the first time. The final nail in the coffin was hammered in with 5 minutes remaining. A defensive clearance was fielded by Phil Thomas, making a welcome return after several seasons out, and he powered his way over in the corner to make the result safe. This win keeps Moor unbeaten at the top of the league as they await their next challenge away at Birchfield on January 19th. |
