At last - Some Rugby!

Choosing to take advantage of the strong wind, Burnley were to dominate play for most of the first half as their tactic of kicking for position pinned Moor in their own territory. Strong defence meant deadlock until the 35th minute, when the visitors converted a penalty for a 3-0 lead. Deep into injury time at the interval, scrum-half Steve Kershaw broke clear from a scrum within the Burnley 22 to touch down but was called back for allegedly ‘crossing’.As they took advantage of the elements, Moor started to exert greater pressure in the second half, giving fly-half Martin Shelley the chance to level the scores with a penalty after 5 minutes. The final quarter saw Moor make the game safe as increased possession allowed them to run the ball more often. From inside his own 22, Shelley made the initial break to feed winger Ivan Smetana who eventually gave the scoring pass to full-back Phil Butcher who stepped inside to touch down wide out; Shelley’s conversion putting Moor 10-3 ahead. From the restart, Moor ran the ball, quickly feeding Smetana who scored a superb try as he jinked down the touchline to outpace the visitor’s defence for a try in the corner. Although the conversion just failed, Shelley was on target to make the final score 18-3 with his second penalty just before the final whistle.Moor made it a clean sweep as their table-topping 2nds maintained their unbeaten record with a 31-3 win over Oldham 2nds. A 34-15 win over Holmes Chapel 2nds meant Moor’s 3rds continued their progress up their table. This Saturday, Moor visit Burnley for a re-arranged league fixture, k.o. 2:15pm.
