Moor win consolidates league lead.

Scoring in the first minute, Moor got off to a flying start. The kick-off was fumbled by the opposition, allowing Martin Shelley to pick up and break downfield before passing to John Jenks for a touchdown, which Shelley converted for a 7 point lead. The same player quickly extended this to 10 points with a successful penalty kick. As the half progressed, Moor found themselves under pressure in the set-scrums and relied upon line-outs and loose play for their supply of ball. One such incident saw flanker Shane Stone steal possession on ‘Boro’s 10-metre line, before driving downfield. He off-loaded to Chris Sutton who sped around under the posts to leave Shelley with an easy conversion.

Turning around 17 points clear, it took Moor another 5 minutes to extend their lead. Winning a line-out on halfway, the ball went quickly along the backs where Ivan Smetana made a fine run up the touchline to score, Shelley converting. Ten minutes later Moor took their tally to 29 when good inter-passing gave Smetana another opportunity to outpace the defence. To their credit, Littleborough never gave up and were eventually rewarded with a try from a close range line-out as the ball was forced over with a driving maul. Moor had a couple of chances to score in the final quarter, but over-elaboration frustrated them.

With their 3 nearest rivals losing, Moor consolidated their position at the top of the division before this week’s outing to Blackpool.

For the second week running, all 3 senior men’s sides won; the 2nd XV winning 26-17 away at Aldwinians 3rds and the 3rd  XV won 31-7 away to Buxton 3rds, leaving them both in fourth place in their respective divisions of the Miller Homes League. The Women’s XV travelled all the way to Blaydon and came away with a 5-5 draw that leaves them in second place in the RFUW National Challenge North 1.
